Collection of one typed letter signed and one autograph letter signed by E. V. Rieu. The typed letter is typed in black ink and signed in green ink on beige Methuen stationery (header: "Methuen & Co Ltd, Publishers"). The handwritten letter is written and signed in black ink on Rieu's own stationery (header: "From E. V. Rieu, 30 Shepherd's Hill, Highgate, London, N. 6, Mountview 4178; Editor: The Penguin Classics"). Both letters signed, "E. V. Rieu." Typed letter is datelined October 24, 1934 in London. Handwritten letter is datelined "7/11/[1948]" in London. Typed letter: 8" x 10." Handwritten letter: 5" x 8." One page each. Letters are very clean and intact except for minuscule age toning, a few horizontal and vertical fold lines, a few small wrinkles, and a small chip on left edge of the handwritten letter (limited to margins). Each letter is Very Good. E. V. Rieu (1887-1972) was a British publisher, translator, and poet who specialized in classic literature. He co-founded the Penguin Classics series with Sir Allen Lane in 1946 which he continued to edit until 1964. Rieu became well-known for his modern translations of the Odyssey, Illiad, and the four Gospels. Rieu was also a friend and editorial mentor of Olaf Stapledon (1886-1950), a British science fiction writer, and the managing director of Methuen Publishing from 1933-1936. In his typed letter dated 1934, Rieu writes briefly to S. P. Bancroft of "Messrs. Sherratt & Hughes" in Manchester about sending him a complimentary copy of Stapledon's new book, Waking World, which will be published soon by Methuen. In his handwritten letter dated 1948, Rieu writes to an anonymous "Madam" about his translations of the Odyssey and the Illiad.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good.
