First Editions (first printings) of the first two volumes of Hughes' never completed trilogy. Individual volume descriptions as follows: 'The Fox in the Attic' (1961). 8vo. 352pp. Blue cloth lettered in gold at spine. Some light partial toning to the free endpapers. Former owner gift inscription inked to the head of the front free pastedown, and with a tiny dealer plate to the adjacent pastedown. A very good copy in non-price-clipped dust wrapper, lightly toned and dust soiled, with some chafing to the natural folds, and some edge wear with several small fractions of loss. 'The Wooden Shepherdess' (1973). First edition. 8vo. 389pp. Blue boards lettered in gold at the spine. Top edge lightly dust soiled. A virtually fine copy in the handsome John Ward-designed pictorial dust wrapper, non-price-clipped but just fractionally rubbed at the head of the spine panel. A very nice, bright set of the first two volumes of Hughes' proposed trilogy which follows the course of European history from the 1920s through the Second World War, interweaving both real and fictional characters. Hughes completed twelve chapters, a little under fifty pages, of the final volume before his death in April 1976.
