8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. On offer is a terrific archive of 76 original handwritten letters dated between 1865 and 1868. The letters, simply put, are love letters and as this archive has both sides of the correspondence one sees the play of life as Miss Sarah Wilson is courted by the Reverend James Laird and as the Reverend is most certainly courted by Miss Wilson. Given the times the romance is pursued in terrific intimacy though much is unwritten and seen between the lines. As the romance becomes love the archive details in many threads of correspondence the local activities of Sarah and family in Durham and James' stays and visits and contacts while on the road. In between the day to day details the romance between James and Sarah reveals that many strong words are used: "I hope you are taking good care of yourself. You know you are my property, so you told me." But a rift seems to develops - Mr. Laird travels so frequently Miss Wilson is forced to plan a their wedding in 1867 and is stressed wishing the Reverend would take control and tell her what to do. The Reverend frequently brings up his health whether good or poor and research finds the James Laird as having died in 1870, a mere 2 years after the letters stop, at the age of 36. The correspondence is all the more intriguing knowing that Mr. Laird is a mere 3-4 years from his demise. James does a super job detailing life on the road traveling from church to church [eventually to be ordained a Wesleyan minister] recording the people he meets, stays with and visits etc., [letters dated Chatham, Cobourg, Hamilton, going to the Walter's Falls Missionary, hearing Abbot, the colored student preach, meeting with Mr. Harper of Hamilton and the celebrated Mr. Stevenson from Toronto…"]. The archive includes a Laird's personal vintage Wesleyan Bible inscribed: "Presented to the Rev. James Laird at his ordination to the Christian Ministry in the Wesleyan Church in Canada, James Elliott, Pres. Hamilton, C.W. June 9, 1867." A negative is found inside the Bible that is presumably a picture of Rev Laird. In total the archive contains 76 letters including 18 stamped covers and 11 stampless marked covers. Bio notes: Rev.
