Original poster with an illustration of two Indigenous men of the Blackfeet Tribe communicating in sign language. The man who faces viewers is in full regalia with a feathered headdress and facial paint. The other man turned to the side does not have facial paint or regalia. Circa 1939. 16" x 21." Poster is clean and intact overall but appears to have been trimmed at the top (most of the featured illustration is unaffected), has trimming or chipping in the lower corners not affecting text or illustration, a few small chips along the edges, a few closed tear at top and bottom with the largest measuring about 1," and slight wrinkling. A Good copy. A beautiful poster featuring a printed illustration of a painting, The Sign Talkers, by Winold Reiss. Based on the copyright information in the lower-left corner of the illustration, Reiss's painting or this poster were made in 1939 for the Great Northern Railway of St. Paul, Minnesota. The reproduction is by Brown & Bigelow. Winold Reiss (1886-1953) was a German-American artist and graphic designer. He is best-known as a portrait painter. Born in Germany, Reiss immigrated to United States in 1913. He had a particular interest in Indigenous Peoples and their cultures. Reiss made it a point to travel west so he could paint portraits of Indigenous people. Around 1920, Reiss began a months-long stay on the Blackfeet Reservation of Montana where he painted thirty-six portraits of tribal members and made lasting friendships that would endure for the rest of his life. In his career, Reiss painted over 250 paintings of Indigenous Peoples, with most representing the Blackfeet Tribe. Reiss became well-known for his compassionate and dignified portrayal of people of various ethnicities.. Poster. Book Condition: Collectible-Good.
