When Helen Coggs claimed to have seen a little white bird in the playground of Fairacre School,Miss Read, her headmistress, said little but Helen's fellow pupils were more outspoken and poured scorn upon the possibility of a little white bird. She had probably seen a seagull or one of the Leghorn hens from the farm.Whoever heard of a little white bird? Whatever next? In fact, the vicar too had seen the bird and was positive that it was an albino robin.Fairacre was soon agog.Henry Mawne, the local ornithologist, wrote a lengthy essay on 'Albinism in British Birds' for the Caxley Chronicle which bewildered that journal's loyal readers while imbuing them with considerable pride. But the white robin came to an untimely end, much to the fury and grief of the villagers. They sought retribution, for the culprit was known, and for some time things looked ugly indeed. And then, one spring day, hope returned. Could the vicar's wife really have seen another white robin? The rumours flew round the village. The sun shone more brightly. The primroses grew larger than ever, and everyone's spirits lifted. With hope rekindled, Fairacre watched and waited. And on this second occasion, the village was not disappointed. An uncommon title from this author,in exceptional condition. Want more MISS READ titles? Goodall.Born Heacham,Norfolk, son of a heart specialist. After leaving Harrow School, he worked in the studios of Sir Arthur Cope RA and E. Watson Nicol under whom he 'was taught with loving care to be a mid-Victorian art student' (The Connoisseur, July 1968).He also studied under Harold Speed and at the Royal Academy Schools (c1930).Served in the Royal Norfolk Regiment(1939-46).He concentrated on line drawing in the 1930s and began to paint in watercolour whilst stationed in India at the end of WWII. Since then, his extensive travels (e.g. twice round the world on a cargo boat) have provided him with many landscape subjects;he also paints conversation pieces and the late 19thC pastiches in watercolour and gouache. As an illustrator, he works in b/w (sometimes in silhouette), and full-colour,turning his 'Victorian' early training to good account in evocative period tableaux. In his wordless picture books he evolved an effective method of telling stories by means of half pages placed between each double-page spread.Elected RBA.RI.
