“From 1817 to 1824 Redoute was producing his monumental work Les Roses, with text by Thory, and this really marks the beginning of our present appreciation of the rose. The three magnificent volumes are a delight to handle owing to their sumptuousness and spacious pages, and every plate shows a masterly hand delineating a fine and, in many examples, a recognizable rose. Les Roses was published under the patronage of Empress Joséphine. The volumes immortalize not only Redoute and Thory, but also the Empress Josephine, who had a gathering of almost every species of Rose at La Malmaison. Redoute had the task of conveying their beauties to paper.” (The Rose Book, Graham Stuart Thomas) “The plates in Les Roses have artistic value, botanical and documentary value, both for species and cultivars still surviving and for those that have disappeared.” (Sir George Taylor quoting Gisèle de la Roche in the Schutter facsimile). Les Roses was published from 1817 to 1824. In each publication, there were several plates by Redoute with commentary by Claude-Antoine Thory. The original paintings no longer exist. They were destroyed in a fire at the Library of the Louvre. The first edition of Les Roses was printed in a deluxe folio edition. It contained two sets of prints – each rose represented by both a black and white print on tan paper and a colour print on vellum. Owing to its size and technique it proved so expensive to produce that finding buyers, even amongst the nobility, proved difficult. Later editions appeared respectively in 1824 and 1828. The octavo edition was met with great success. It is estimated that 200-300 copies were produced. While it was less costly than the deluxe first edition printings, it was still a book only the privileged could afford.
