PUGIN, Augustus Welby ( ASSOCIATION COPY Washington HIBBERT) : The True Principles of Pointed or Christian Architecture: Set Forth in Two Lectures Delivered at St. Marie's, Oscott

John Weale, London, 1841

A very good copy in the original 1/4 dark green leathern green armorial gilt cloth boards, spine ends worn and lightly chipped, the contents clean and tight with all original tissue guards present, plates showing very slight scattered foxing. The publisher's 40pp catalogue is bound in at end. A fine association copy having the bookplate of Washington HIBBERT. John Hubert Washington Hibbert (1804-1875) was the son of Thomas Hibbert (1761-1807) and Dorothy Mansfield. John purchased an estate in Warwickshire in 1840, he completely remodelled the house employing Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin to design both the exteriors and interiors. The work was on a grand scale; starting in 1841 it took ten years to complete and has been described as ‘one of the other great domestic schemes of Pugin’s mature years’. Saint Marie’s Catholic Church in Rugby owes its existence to John; his wife Julia was a Catholic and later in life he himself converted. John purchased land on Dunchurch Road and commissioned Augustus Pugin to design a church. When the congregation required an extension of the church building Hibbert and others put together the funds for Pugin’s son Edward Welby Pugin to undertake the necessary work. I Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin (1 May 1812 – 14 September 1852) was an English architect, designer, artist and critic, chiefly remembered for his pioneering role in the Gothic Revival style; his work culminated in the interior design of the Palace of Westminster. True Principles of Pointed or Christian Architecture was published in 1841, when Pugin was 29 years old. In it he presented coherent arguments for the revival of the Gothic style.
