Prince Alfred : HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS ALFRED ERNEST ALBERT, Dedicated by Gracious Permission To Her Majesty

lithograph, 510 x 360 mm (framed 750 x 590 mm), India paper proof, by Lake Price, photo from life, 1858, lithographed by Lynch, London 1858, published April 18th, 1859 by S. Mitchell, Bookseller & Publisher to the Queen, and by Special Appointment to the Emperor Napoleon III, Royal Library, Old Bond Street, in fine condition

Prince Alfred's signature on a scrap of paper (35 x 80 mm) is lightly pasted on at the right hand corner of the print next to the title - it reads "Alfred, 26th June 1862". It appears to have been specially signed rather than being cut from a letter or album. Prince Alfred visited South Africa in 1860 principally to inaugurate the Table Bay Breakwater on 17th September of that year. On the following day he laid the foundation stone of the new South African Library and Museum in the presence of the Governor Sir George Grey. In this print taken the year before, Prince Alfred poses in the uniform of a naval cadet holding a telescope against a background of the sea breaking at the foot of a dramatic cliff.
