In the 'Odyssey' Homer tells the story of Odysseus, the wily and courageous King of Ithaca, and of his long and adventurous journey home after the Greeks had sacked Troy and the Trojan War was over.Although the war had lasted ten years Odysseus was not destined to see his home for many years after that. His son Telemachus, that he had left as a tiny baby, had grown into manhood and his wife Penelope was being pestered by suitors for her hand in marriage, who, since they were sure that Odysseus was dead, filled the palace with their clamour and revelry. Telemachus and Peneolpe did not believe that Odysseus was dead, and Telemachus set out to discover what he could about his father. Meanwhile Odysseus encountered all kinds of dangers from monsters, sorceresses, storms and whirlpools, and even ventured into the land of Hades before he finally reached the shores of Ithaca.                       Joan Kiddell-Monroe (1908-1972),born Clacton-on-Sea.Studied at Willesden and Chelsea Schools of Art. Worked initially in an advertising studio and then turned freelance. In 1936 she married Webster Murray, illustrator for 'The Tatler' and 'The Sketch' and portrait painter. From 1944,she concentrated on book illustration. She travelled in Africa during the 1950's,and eventually settled in Mallorca. Joan Kiddell-Monroe was one of the outstanding professional illustrators of her generation, and her drawings combined a fluent,well-modulated line with a rhythmic and elegant decorative sense. She had a keen eye for detail, and this contributed to her ability to adapt her style in sympathy with the varied sources and subjects of her texts. Her versatility is clearly seen in the Oxford Myths and Legends series - folk tales collected from many parts of the world. She was particularly fond of drawing animals, and often included them in her designs. She worked mainly in black and white, sometimes with one added colour, and sometimes with the full colour range.  Please contact seller, for correct shipping/P+p quotes - particularly ALL overseas buyers - BEFORE ordering through the order page!          N.B.
