See also my book IDs' rja1100523 and rja22446 for same author's+illustrator's other titles: 'THE ILIAD OF HOMER' and 'THE AENEID OF VIRGIL' respectively.  For nine long years the Greeks had been at war with Troy, camped by their ships beyond the walls of the city. They had come to win back Helen, the wife of the Greek King Menelaus, whom Paris, son of the king of Troy, had stolen from him.Homer,in his great poem 'The Iliad',tells of the events of the tenth year of the war: how Achilles, the greatest warrior among the Greeks, quarrelled with Agamemnon, the High King, with disastrous consequences for the Greeks; how Achilles was roused to great wrath for the sake of his friend Patroclus, and how he avenged him against Hector, the boldest fighter among the Trojans. It is a stirring and exciting tale of pride and love, vengeance and daring deeds of battle. To her dignified re-telling Barbara Leonie Picard has added a Prologue and an Epilogue which recount the events that led up to and followed Homer's story. The book is a companion to her 'Odyssey of Homer' in the Oxford Children's Classics series.  Joan Kiddell-Monroe (1908-1972),born Clacton-on-Sea.Studied at Willesden and Chelsea Schools of Art.Worked initially in an advertising studio and then turned freelance. In 1936 she married Webster Murray, illustrator for 'The Tatler' and 'The Sketch' and portrait painter. From 1944,she concentrated on book illustration. She travelled in Africa during the 1950's,and eventually settled in Mallorca. Joan Kiddell-Monroe was one of the outstanding professional illustrators of her generation, and her drawings combined a fluent,well-modulated line with a rhythmic and elegant decorative sense. She had a keen eye for detail, and this contributed to her ability to adapt her style in sympathy with the varied sources and subjects of her texts. Her versatility is clearly seen in the Oxford Myths and Legends series - folk tales collected from many parts of the world. She was particularly fond of drawing animals, and often included them in her designs. She worked mainly in black and white, sometimes with one added colour, and sometimes with the full colour range.                                     Please contact seller, for correct shipping/P+p quotes - particularly ALL overseas buyers - BEFORE ordering through the order page!
