Perrin, W. H., J. H. Battle, and G. C. Kniffin : Kentucky: A History Of The State, Sixth Edition, Signed Copy

F. A. Battey and Company, Louisville, 1887

4to. vii, 738pp, index, illustrated with numerous full-page plates, including a reproduction of Filson's Map, and a number of portraits, including Henry Clay, Isaac Shelby, John C. Breckinridge, Daniel Boone, John J. Crittenden, James Guthrie, Ben Hardin Helm, James S. Jackson, Humphrey Marshall, and George D. Prentice, rebound at some point in modern brown buckram, with new pastedowns and endpapers, gilt titles at spine, and what appears to be a neatly trimmed section of the original cover laid-down professionally, all edges marbled, minor general wear, a few very small faded spots noted at spine head, bookplate at front pastedown, autograph note signed - ANS - laid-in, inscribed and signed by the third author, "Mrs. Sallie Price / with compliments of her friend / G. C. Kniffin / Christmas 1895." There is a short ink note at front fly, apparently written by Mrs Price, with the names Sallie Price Ferren, Agnes Price Vogelsang, and Irene Ruth Wilkinson. A well-preserved copy overall. Confusion has long existed concerning the titles in this series -- even among booksellers -- because the authors referred to each Volume as an Edition, thus some researchers believed that each Edition included multiple volumes in a set, which is not the case. Nine editions total (i. e. nine volumes) were published, with two being labeled number 8. According to the publisher, each edition contained a History of the State with its ties to early Virginia, a section of brief histories of each of Kentucky's 118 counties, followed by appendices, one of which contained a listing of both Federal and Confederate Troops in service from Kentucky, then a section of biographical sketches of persons specific to various counties depending on the edition. The biographical sketches are not present in this volume. Scarce.. Book. Book Condition: VG. Binding: Hardcover
