When this volume was published, the Nigerian general and politician, Olusegun Obasanjo was still imprisoned by the Abacha regime (on release he campaigned and later became the first president of a newly democratic Nigeria in 2003). Of utmost interest in this copy is the inclusion of a letter from Aileen Marshall (now of the Africa Desk of the World Bank and the wife of American diplomat, Carlos Pascual (he was at one time US Ambassador to the Ukraine)) to AMINA CACHALIA a long term friend of Nelson Mandela and whose husband, Yusuf, was a peer and fellow activist of Mandela in the 1950s and beyond. The letter reads: "Amina, I thought you might like a copy of this - given the efforts you made to a contribution from Mandela into it. Although there are some publishing glitches - odd attributions (I have become a South African!) & I have a feel it will fall apart after it has been opened a few times - it remains, I think quite a tribute to the General. His wife gave him a copy and though he couldn't keep it he was allowed to read it and he was tremendously moved by the gesture . Aileen and Carlos 2/22/97". The book itself has been much used and owned. The cover is worn and creased but is still secure and sure. The page edges and pages have user marks and evidence of readership. Nonetheless, they are benign, clear, assure. calm, very diligent and most competent. The illustrated plates (art pieces from African artists) are bright, vivid and exciting.
