Contemporary half morocco with cloth boards, spine with 6 gilt floral designed compartments of raised bands, gilt title on two., A very good example, occasional stains and browning , but generally the plates and texts are clean and crisp., Quarto (208 x 272mm) , Complete with 118 plates including map, plus two Illustrated Title Pages. Title page of volume 1 with an engraved vignette titled “Wigwam in the Forest” village by Bartlett. Volume 2 contains engraved frontis entitled “Montreal from the Mountain” by Bartlett, title page with engraved vignette entitled “The horse-shoe falls” by Bartlett. Plate entitled “Split Rock” is misplaced on p.114 instead of p.105., Volume : 2 volumes in 1

Bartlett made four voyages to the United States and Canada between the years 1836 and 1852, the fruits of which appeared in American Scenery in 1840 and Canadian Scenery in 1842 with text by N.P. Willis”(Harper). In autumn of 1836 in company with Willis he visited Niagara Falls and presumably was briefly in Canada. Journeyed from Halifax to Niagara in1838, completing 117 sepia wash drawings which were engraved and published with text by Willis in a two volume Canadian Scenery in 1840 (DNB).
