Two volumes (complete). A pleasing set of this RARE first edition of what is still a core Bibliographic title. Unnumbered copy of a limited run of 500 copies (of which only 450 were for sale). The front pastedowns of both books have an ex-libris plate for Jacob de Villiers, previous Chief Justice and Head of the Appeal Court of the early days of the Union of South Africa. The plate bears the historic arms of the de Villiers family (motto: La main à l'oeuvre ; coronet of count (but not peer of France)). The frontispages of both bear de Villiers' signature. They also have the signature of the Afrikaans academic, P S Nienaber. The boards of both books are robust, resolute. They are much worn, scuffed and marked all about from handling and storage. Nonetheless, they are healthy and steady. The contents are agreeably venerable and aged. They are pleasantly assured and generous. Volume 1: 1008 pages -: introduction ; AA, Pieter Vander - Menpes, Mortimer. Volume 2: 1139 pages -: Mentzel, O F - (Zulu War): Recollections of a Nurse ; South African Imperial Blue Books ; Magazines, &c ; Magazine Articles [Sections: Basutoland, Boer War, 1880-1881, Cape Colony, German South-West Africa, Jameson Raid, Natal and Zululand, Orange River Colony, Portuguese South-East Africa, Rhodesia, South Africa in General, South African War, 1899-1902, Transvaal] ; Autograph Letters, &c. [from: Alexander, Sir James Edward - (Zwavelkrans): D S Diagram of farm in the district of Heilbron] ; Index ; Cartography of South Africa.
