Meade [1844-1914] was the pseudonym of Elizabeth Thomasina Meade Smith,a prolific writer of girls' stories and not generally known, crime and sci-fi novels too.Writing from the age of 17,and in her lifetime, she produced over 300 books, being so prolific that no fewer than eleven new titles under her byline appeared in the first few years after her death. Jack Butler Yeats [1871-1957].Contributed regularly to Punch (1910-41) under the pseudonym W.Bird.Born in London, son of the Irish figure and portrait painter John Butler Yeats, and brother of the poet W.B. Yeats. Educated in County Sligo where he lived with his grandparents.Studied art at South Kensington and Chiswick Art Schools and under Frederick Brown at Westminster School of Art.He wrote and illustrated stories and plays for books and magazines, edited two monthly publications: 'A Broadsheet' (1902-03) and 'A Broadside' (1908- 1915),and produced prints,Christmas cards and calendars for the Cuala Press. He lived in Devon from 1897 to 1910 and then in Ireland; he died in Dublin. From around 1905,Yeats devoted much of his energy into oil paintings of Irish life and landscape, and it is for these that he is now best known. Nevertheless, his drawings and illustrations formed an important part of his work. They are bold and spirited, recalling in their directness and informality, the graphic work of Manet, but drawn in a wholly individual manner.
