On offer is a remarkable lifetime archive of personal papers, photographs, awards, documents and news clippings plus a very large group of incoming correspondence being approximately 540 individual letters from family, friends and other artists, et al of noted New Jersey artist Maxwell Stewart Simpson [1896 - 1984]. This huge, very generous collection of ephemera provides an intimate, lifetime, comprehensive look at the art and life of the artist from the Roaring Twenties through the Hippie Era until his death in 1984. [There is a small grouping of 50 or so letters relating to Simpson's father and family dating as early as 1880s.] On another level this archive is sure to please collectors and historians of the early 20th century art in America given the breadth of Simpson's associations with many, many important American and International artists and personalities of his day including Max Mager, John del Russi, Victor Boetsch, Spruill, Westerman, Muse, and Renee Andre. Maxwell Stewart Simpson born in Elizabeth, New Jersey in 1896 was a painter, etcher and lithographer. Simpson studied art at the National Academy of Design, New York under the tutelage of Douglas Volk in 1914. In the summer of 1916, he attended classes at the Art Students League. Simpson traveled and painted in Europe in 1923 and 1924. He lived and worked in Paris, France, Italy, and Oxford, England. He began exhibiting his art around 1920 and shortly thereafter became a member of the Chicago Society of Etchers and the Society of Independent Artists. During his career, Maxwell Stewart Simpson was known for his fine landscapes, marines, still life and portraits, both as a painter and original printmaker. The art of Maxwell Simpson is housed in many major American public collections including, Rutgers University, the New York Public Library, the Art Institute of Detroit, the Newark Museum and the New Jersey State Museum. Along with the vast correspondence is an equally vast personally compiled photographic bibiolgraphy of Simpson's works being over 450 mounted photos, dated, titled, sized etc in Simpson's hand. In addititon the archive includes original art: one large oil painting (rolled) by Simpson, unsigned; one large lithograph (signed), and various small sketches, doodles, and hand decorated envelopes; 50+ exhibition catalogs from the 1920's to 1960's; various awards given to Simpson for his art from a variety of Institutions, including the Salamagundi Club; a small number of personal books; many hundreds of photographs including historic photos, portraiture, family, travel etc.; a 1914 Yearbook; many, many news clippings; personal school ephemera including diplomas, certificates, records etc.; art catalogues.
