MARK, William : A Fine Calligraphic Manuscript Vocabulary (of Naval Signals) Parts 1, 2 and 3

The manuscript occupies the first 100 pages of a small quarto blank book, the paper watermarked 1812, and lists the numerical equivalents of all signals to be sent. The inside front board has watercolours of the 10 numerical flags and a table of contents. The manuscript is thumbindexed by cutting the free fore-edges of each leaf producing a descending alphabetic arrangement of content. Athough there is no name of author, this is definitely by William Mark, having been acquired by us from a direct descendant with other items. William Mark RN (b. Berwick on Tweed 5.3.1782, d. Alhaurin 13.1.1849) served in the Royal Navy on the Boreas (as an ordinary seaman); Hydra (Captain's Clerk;assistant secretary Commodore Bichester); The Victory (Assistant Secretary to Admiral Nelson), as well as the Hacyon; San Juan , leaving the Navy in 1815 at the end of the Napoleonic Wars. From 1824 to 1836 he was the British Consul at Malaga, establishing the English Cemetery there which still exists. This manuscript is an attractive evocation of the period, giving details of communication vital to British naval supremacy in the period.
