MARION REBUSCHATIS [later FLAGG] : 1912 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A PERSONABLE WASHINGTON DC AREA GIRL

48mo - over 3" - 4" tall. On offer is a fascinating, original 1912 manuscript diary handwritten by a charming and observant young girl named Marion Rebuschatis [later Flagg] living in the Takoma area of Washington, DC. While the diary has entries from January through to May 2nd she does a super job giving the reader of a picture of the life and times of a young woman and her family living in Washington. Casual research suggest she was born sometime in 1899 making her 13 or so at the writing which fits in with her activities. Here are some snippets: "Titanic disaster dreadful. I went to the woods and got some beautiful pansy violets. Later I went to the library…Had my tonsils cut out. Took ether. I came out in a cab and stayed in bed all day. The ether made me very sick…Doctor Carrico took them out in his office…Went to the hospital to see Mrs Hamilton and found one of Mother's little girlfriends…I had my palate clipped at Dr Carrico's. I never had anything hurt like that did in my life. In the evening I went to the Stereopticon lecture with Stuarts. Went to SS and Church. Came out to Takoma in the afternoon. Today is my birthday. Aunt Emma gave me a cake, Aunt Margaret gave me two hair ribbons, pap gave me some pumps and mama gave me a ring and parasol...Went to school, had a fine time in the afternoon I went to the library to look up something about James Abbot McNeill Whistler the son of Major George Washington Whistler, Lucille, Ruth and Elizabeth were there had a fine time…Mrs Colonel Hamilton and I walked over to the Sanatorium. We saw the patients, she said she would take to the Walter Reed Hospital with her Saturday…Helping Walter get up the matting for the dance tonight. I went in to the doctor in the afternoon, he said come next Saturday. In the evening I went to the dance. We had lots of fun dancing and playing games was up until half past twelve. Catherine Tilden came home from out West. She has been there for a long time since last summer. She is glad to get home and says she hopes never to have to go West again…We had the George Washington exercises, Colonel Niffin was our speaker he made a very good speech. We saw a boy come over here with a valentine and leave it and found out later that it was from the Stuart's…I went downtown and went to see Maude Adams in Chanticleer. She was splendid, the play was very different from most of them…Went to school and I was transferred to eight grade. I am coming to the Takoma School. I am lad that I can make friends with all the girls. We had the graduation exercises at the Grover Cleveland School and poor Fairley was dead tired. She had worked so hard to have the graduation a success that she was dead almost…Papa and I bowled and went to a moving picture show in the afternoon…It is rumored that the Brightwood school has burnt down though I don't know whether it's true or not…" Overall VG..
