Original black and white portrait photograph of Katherine Grey (1873-1950), an American Broadway actress, who wears an elegant gown and sits on a chair with a backdrop that features tapestry with a papyrus pattern and a fur rug on the floor. Photograph mounted on original white mat board with gilt, beveled edges on the exterior. No date, circa 1895. Mat board measures 6 3/4" x 9 3/4." Photograph measures 5 5/8" x 8." "Marceau, Paris Panel, 826 Market St., San Francisco, Cal." in slight relief on the front lower margin. More photographer's information printed on the back. On the front, the photograph and mat board have slight foxing, and mat board has a small spot in the lower margin, but they are otherwise very clean and intact. The back of the mat board is completely clean and intact. Theo C. Marceau (1859-1922) was an American photographer and was instrumental in the establishment of national photography studio chains in the U.S. during the 1880s. He had several photography studios that specialized in a variety of subjects such as portraiture, scientific photography, and photojournalism.
