Original publisher's white paper wrappers with staple binding. Full-page color illustration by Clay Kelly on front of pioneers and wagons on the Overland Trail during sunrise or sunset. "Founded by Bret Harte in 1868 and the Out West Magazine, Consolidated" printed on front cover. 9" x 12." Forty-eight pages, complete. Many black-and-white printed photographs and illustrations, complete. Black-and-white advertisements for a variety of businesses and services interspersed throughout. Some of the ads have small illustrations. Pages and covers are intact overall but have brown spots and stains throughout (possibly foxing) and a dampstain at the tail of the spine. Small chip in the upper-right corner of front cover not affecting text. Text is still very clear and readable. A Good copy. The first issue of the consolidated Overland Monthly and Out West Magazine, Vol. LXXXI, No. 1, May 1923. The Overland Monthly was a monthly magazine founded by Anton Roman (according to other sources) in 1868 with the noted California author, Bret Harte, as its first editor. The magazine was based in California and emphasized stories and literature about California and other western states. A number of prominent authors became contributors to the Overland Monthly. Hunt, "With the Publishers: Comment and Criticism on Timely Books," and "Contributors to This Number" [brief biographies on the authors, some of which have accompanying printed portrait photos],.
