The author describes the institutional life and research activities of the Italian Thalassographic Committee from its origins to 1929, when it was absorbed by the Italian Research Council (Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche) and thus lost its autonomy. Founded in 1908, it was the first state institution in Italy to promote oceanographic research. In keeping with the ideas of its founder, the mathematician Vito Volterra, who promoted closer collaboration of science, technology and production on a national scale, one of its aims was to promote the Italian fishing industry. 525 gr. xii-274 p..
