On offer is a super, original archive of 125 World War II manuscript letters dated November 1944 through September 1945 handwritten by United States Navy Lieutenant Armand Minkin all addressed to his wife and their newborn baby boy in Newport, Rhode Island. Lt. Minkin does a great job diarizing his life serving his country while based for the most part in San Francisco blending his obvious affection for his wife and concern for the fledgling family getting on without him he narrates his views and perception of the war effort for his wife's benefit. He notes various military events; the death of President Roosevelt, Russian involvement in the war, VJ Day, the Atomic Bomb, Japanese surrender, etc., and first hand accounts of what he had witnessed during his service like the destruction of multiple ports/bases, Japanese American internment camps, Japanese prisoners or war, VJ day celebrations, San Francisco, the Philippines and much, much more. Here is a snippet from a letter dated August 9th, 1945 - "The new atomic bomb is still quite a topic of conversation. If it's as terrible as the reports claim, I think that it will really cause the old war to end sooner than we expect. It actually is a frightening sounding affair." There are minor tears and fading due to age but overall G+. ONLINE OBITUARY: MIDDLETOWN - Armand Minkin, 99, of Middletown, RI, died Thursday, January 20, 2011 at the Newport Hospital after a brief illness. Born in Fall River, MA, on January 25, 1911, he was a son of the late Barney and Ida (Sirensky) Minkin. Mr. Minkin was a graduate of BMC Durfee High School, class of 1928, and a graduate of Boston University, class of 1932. He was a World War II Veteran of the United States Navy who had earned the rank of Senior Grade Lieutenant and had served as a Communications Officer in the Pacific. After the war he and his brothers owned the former Minkin Automotive and Radio Stores, in Newport, Fall River, and New Bedford. He later worked as a federal employee for 34 years in Newport, retiring in 1998. He was a member of St. Paul's Lodge of Masons. Mr. Minkin was also a gifted pianist playing from the age of 8 until he was 98 years old.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Good+
