(Cape Town, The Van Riebeeck Society, 1960, 1963, 1966, 1969)

Van Riebeeck Society 1st series, volumes 41, 44, 47 and 50. 4-volume 8vo set; original cloth; pp. xxii + 318 + (viii), xvi + 349 + (vii), xiv + 495 + (vii), xvi + 327 + (vii); monochrome plates; maps, incl. folding. Very good, clean condition internally; spines rather mottled in each case, likewise boards of 1st and 4th volumes. "Cape parliamentarian and last Premier of the Cape Colony, [John Xavier Merriman] was the eldest of nine children of Nathaniel J. Merriman . . . and his wife Julia Potter. . . . Merriman's most enduring quality derives from his distinctive gifts as a letter-writer. The large collection of Merriman letters is housed in the South African Library and illuminates every facet of his long life and political career. They have been consulted by generations of students, whose researches they have nourished; and the Van Riebeeck Society, very fittingly, has published extensive and annotated selections from this correspondence. Merriman emerges as one of the great recorders and interpreters of the dramatic period in which he lived." (DSAB II pp. 463, 469).
