First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. 118 pages. Landmark collection of color photographs. The second follow-up to the photographer's classic, "Crosstown". The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. A brilliant production by Marvin Hoshino: Regular-sized volume format. Maroon cloth boards with titles embossed on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Helen Levitt. Foreword by John Szarkowski. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper by EBS in Verona, Italy to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with black titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Helen Levitt's "Slide Show". Her photographs in color. "Slide Show", like "Here And There", is presented as companion volumes, enlarging the breadth that "Crosstown" captured while emphasizing the latter's more intimate side. "World-renowned for her iconic black-and-white street photographs, New York City's visual poet laureate also possesses a little-known archive of color work. In 1959, and again in 1960, Helen Levitt received grants from the Guggenheim Foundation to photograph in color the streets of New York. The best of these pioneering color pictures were stolen from her apartment in 1970 and she had to start all over again. In 1974, the new work was shown as a continuous slide projection at New York's Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), an early example of a slide-show presentation by a museum, and one of the first exhibitions of serious color photography anywhere in the world" (Publisher's blurb). The work garnered lavish (and well-deserved) praise from a late great writer who worked with both Helen Levitt and Walker Evans on some of the finest photography books the world will ever see: "As beautiful, perceptive, satisfying, and enduring as any lyrical work that I know. In their general quality and coherence, the photographs seem to me to combine into a unified view of the world, an uninsistent but irrefutable manifesto of a way of seeing, and in a gently and wholly unpretentious way, a major poetic work" (James Agee). Now that color has become the preferred medium of many serious contemporary photographers, the publication of Levitt's exemplary work could not be more timely and necessary. Helen Levitt died on March 29, 2009 at the age of 95, "all-seeing" to the end, and will be sorely missed. An absolute "must-have" title for Helen Levitt collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black pen on the title page by Helen Levitt. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a great photography book. This is one of very few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Signed copies of Helen Levitt's books are scarce, and will only increase in value. Copies were badly damaged in transit because of shoddy packing on the publisher's part. A rare signed copy thus. 111 color plates. Helen Levitt's "A Way of Seeing" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER HELEN LEVITT TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 1576872521.
