Dilly, Charles, 1788

657 pages (complete). A most venerable copy. Fothergill was one of the most progressive men of his generation. He advanced the treatment of Scarlet Fever, diphtheria. He identified arteriosclerosis as a condition. He encouraged inoculation against small pox. Fothergill as reckoned coffee better than tea (which was a luxury drink at the time). Further to this his botanical research and paintings were much regarded and sought after (Catherine II of Russia bought his botanical paintings after his death in 1780). He was active in prison reform and worked with Benjamin Franklin (as a Quaker) to try to avoid war between Britain and the American Colonies. This is a collection of medical and scientific papers in particular. It is much worn. Fully leather bound. Large and heavy. The boards are worn all about. They are scuffed and marked. They are, however, sound and sturdy. The spine is also worn about the seams and body. Five ridges. The aspect is benign and assured. Within, there is a presentation inscription: "Presentation by M Woolrich to R Chorley 1801." There is also a signature by Rebecca Chorley. The front inside cover has an ex-libris plate for Elizabeth Waterhouse (possibly the same who is renowned for her craft ware based on botanical design). Frontisplate etched portrait of Fothergill. The contents, especially given the age and evident usage of the book, are most agreeable and placid. The early and later pages have age related foxing and tanning but are clear and contented. Two hand coloured plates (one of the Coffea Arabica plant). Handmade paper, handpressed printing. Printer markings at the foot of the pages. Some of the text is in Latin. Majority of the text is in English. The pages are tight, clear, firm, comfortable and healthy to the touch and sight. The pages are clear, calm, confident, clubbable. A thoroughly pleasing book especially with the illustrations being sharply detailed and clear. Perfect for display, perusal and ownership. fk. Book Condition: Good. Binding: Hardcover. Jacket: No Jacket
