Bright,clean with minor discolouration and/or minor grubbing,sharp-cornered, publisher's original,beige/light khaki cloth boards/covers with bright,crisp,2-colour (brown+yellow) tooled illustration of an angled Uhlan lance and book's title superimposed across it to front,a slightly darkened spine/ backstrip with brown lettering,rear board/cover plain and undecorated except for a brown tooled publisher's device (a windmill) to lower corner at foot of spine's gutter's edge/ fold.Negligible shelf-wear,bumping, creasing to edges and corners - no nicks tears,splits or fraying present,clean maroon eps,hinges solid and sound without any cracking.Top+fore-edges both lightly toned with faint,minimal and sporadic foxing/spotting - a much lesser degree than is usually encountered for a book of it's age; contents bright,tight with very minimal foxing/spotting throughout, no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners - appears unread,apart from my own collation.UK,12mo HB,no dw/dj,1st edn,1- 304pp [paginated] includes 12 chapters, plus [unpaginated] lightly foxed/spotted recto of blank,foxed verso and blank recto of half-title page,title page,an epigraph, with blank recto. A scarce 1st edn,and a true literary find for any collector of this genre. An unusual semi-autobiographical account of German cavalry [Uhlans - German Lancers] activities during WW1. Born Vienna,Austria-Hungary in 1897,as Alexander Marie Norbert Lernet,only adopting and adding his mother's maiden name to his,in 1920.Volunteered for the Austro-Hungarian army in September 1915, and fought in WW1 from 1916 onward, serving in the eastern battle theatres and ending the war as a lieutenant.During his service time he first took to poetry,and became a protégé of Rainer Maria Rilke in 1917. After the war he became a full-time writer and published his first volume of poetry,'Pastoral.' in 1921 and his first drama, 'Demetrius' in 1925.His works spanned from 1917 to 1974.
