On offer is a super vintage scrapbook of Composers circa 1898 wherein over 47 pages Lena Estelle Gregory of Michigan [a pianist herself] lovingly honored the careers of famous composers: Edward MacDowell, William Mason, Josef Hofmann and Teresa Carreno. The items date from late 1800's to 1930's. Signed letters dated 1898, one signed by Mason, the other by composer Harry Rowe Shelley. Many newspaper articles from "The Recorder", articles from "Boston Transcript", "Harper's Weekly", "London Musical News", "Cleveland Press", "The Detroit News", articles written by Mrs. Edward MacDowell, etc... Headings such as; "When MacDowell's Mind Snapped", "The Tragedy of America's First Composer", "MacDowell's Comprehensibleness", "To Honor MacDowell", "The Recorder Visits the Home of MacDowell", "...First time in Musical History of NY, Carnegie Hall...", "Detroit Symphony to Honor Memory of MacDowell Today", etc... Also includes programs, such as; "Edward MacDowell Memorial", "Recital Lecture (1911-1912) by Mrs. Edward MacDowell", "Lectures delivered at Columbia University", " Compositions by Edward MacDowell" by The Arthur P. Schmidt Co., "Edward MacDowell experienced a complete breakdown [Aug 18, 1906]", "Edward MacDowell Idealist", "MacDowell Day will be celebrated...", etc... Included is a piece of music in the scrapbook that says at the top "Autograph Manuscript of MacDowell from "The Joy of Autumn". Copyright by A. P. Schmidt." Also in cursive "Buoyantly, exuberantly. (p=about 152)", then something that may be a signature, and "op 62". Includes pictures of "The Little Cabin" where MacDowell wrote his music. Handwritten account by Abbie Farwell Brown entitled: "From Boyhood of Edward MacDowell" "To A Wild Rose", also..."From "People and Music", by McGeher. Perhaps notes from a lecture. Regarding Dr. William Mason, "America's Foremost Piano Pedagog". Much the same compilation of his life from "Ancestry, Early Years, Music Teachers, Years Abroad, and his studies in Leipsic." "William as a Boy", "Work in Musical Education", "Ingenious Technical Exercises". A Mason Program. "Remarkable Career, Compositions, Anton Rubinstein Friendship" (Dreyschock in Prague, Liszt at Weimar). "A Loving Cup for Dr. Mason" (for his 70th birthday). An article Mason wrote himself "The Practical Teacher, How to Secure a Good Tone". Regarding Josef Hofmann, also from childhood. There is a picture of Josef Hofmann at 8 years old. Programs from recitals. One from his FIRST Piano Recital, March 3d, 1898 at Carnegie Music Hall. Also, Performing with Jean Gerardy and Fritz Kreisler at Light Guard Armory, Detroit, April 16th, 1902. Program from a performance at I.M.A. Auditorium in 1930. Interesting article published in 1928 entitled "[Josef Hofmann] Keeps Marriage Secret 4 Years" and finally, "The Most Remarkable Concerts Ever Given" "Josef Hofmann Plays 255 Compositions From Memory at 21 Concerts Before 67,000 Persons"(1913). Finally...Teresa Carreno, Great Pianist. A bit of history and Programs from Detroit, Carnegie Hall, Chickering Hall and Boston Symphony Orchesra. Inside the back cover is a picture of a girl in a ballet type pose outdoors, beneath the picture "The woodland stage at Peterborough", on the bottom right corner "Peterboro N.H. 1911" "A G Learned". This amazing collection is in fragile condition, front and back covers are detached but present. Overall G.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Good
