Faas/Gallery Millan, Sao Paulo, Brasil, 2016

First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 90 pages. Artist Book. One of the most beautiful art photography books of our time. The first and only edition. Published in a one-time-only print run as a hardcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. There is no ISBN. The Artist Book is now rare. A brilliant production by Fernando Lemos: Regular-sized volume format. Pictorial blue-and-white cloth boards with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. The book is reversible: One side is in the Portuguese original, the flip side is in felicitous English translation. The photographs that appear on either side are different from each other. Photographs and text by Fernando Lemos. Essay by Annateresa Fabris and other contributors. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Sao Paulo, Brazil to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Published on the occasion of the great artist/photographer's 90th Birthday. Presents Fernando Lemos' "O Real Como Enigma/The Real As Enigma". A gem of a book. The last surviving Portuguese-Brazilian Surrealist artist/photographer of our time, who brings to mind Salvador Dali, on the one hand, and Jerry Uelsmann, on the other. At his best, Lemos is as good as Dali and better than Uelsmann: He is the preeminent, contemporary Surrealist-as-Conceptual artist, who emphasizes the sensuous qualities of the most abstract ideas. "Causes the visible to acquire a different meaning. The image in black-and-white, something that has no color, is an object operating in shadows, not fully transparent, but is also translucent. Rather than creating compelling images that defy common sense, Fernando Lemos proposes that art, above all, must be thought through and criticized seriously. Despite the automatism that Surrealism suggests, genuine innovation and transgression occur only with prior reasoning" (Annateresa Fabris). Which is self-evident in the stunningly beautiful images themselves: They have a rigor and clarity that do not come from and indeed, one will not associate with "free association" or French/Classical Surrealism. Or as we like to say these days, they are counter-intuitive rather than intuitive. They prove that Surrealism is alive and well because it isn't just about an early 20th-century Movement, but because "the liberation of the imagination can never be reduced to a mere style of art much less a form of amusement. Surrealism is always new because the subversive imagination is always right now, when you need it, ready or not" (Penelope Rosement). "Chaos for us is of such urgent importance that we think we should have rules and regulations" (Fernando Lemos). An absolute "must-have" title for Fernando Lemos collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed and dated (in the year of publication) in black ink-pen twice, on both sides of the book's front free endpapers, by the artist/photographer: "Fernando Lemos 2016". It is signed directly on the pages themselves, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the Artist Book available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies of the artist's previous books available online, none of them signed, command hundreds of dollars. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with photographic plates. One of the greatest artist/photographers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. .
