the Seven works in three vols in contemporary 1/4 dark brown morocco, hinges and spine ends very rubbed and cracking, the bindings tight with all original wrappers bound in, the text blocks immaculate. The Pen drawing, the same size as the books, is indistinctly captioned " ", and is signed L-C and dated 28 Mai ??Mar) 1938. The works contained are as follows: 1. A Peinture Moderne. 1927 12th EDITION; 6. L'art Decoratif D'Aujoud'hui 1933 6th EDITION; 7. Une Maison - un Palais: A la Recherche d'une Unité Architecturale 1928 FIRST EDITION. On the inside rear endpaper in one of the volumes is the ownership signature of Rex MARTIENSSEN, Paris March 1938. REX MARTIENSSEN (1905-1942) was the leader of what LE CORBUSIER dubbed 'le Groupe Transvaal', the so-called Transvaal Group on receipt of a copy of zerohour in 1933 from MARTIENSSEN who was again in Europe, where in Paris he visited LE CORBUSIER. LE CORBUSIER introduced MARTIENSSEN to the work of Leger which influenced MARTIENSSEN's attitude to modern European art. In December 1937 MARTIENSSEN married Heather Bush, a talented student at the School of Architecture. Together they spent about six months in Europe, enjoying further meetings with LE CORBUSIER and with Leger. Martienssen is credited with introducing the Modern Movement to South Africa, documented in Gilbert HERBERT Martienssen and the International Style: The Modern Movement in South African Architecture (Balkema 1975). In particular the 1938 Europe trip and interaction with Le Corbiusier on that trip is covered pp189ff of that work.
