First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 180 pages. Rare Josef Koudelka collectible set. A fine copy of "Exiles" First Hardcover Edition with a pristine/shrinkwrapped copy of "Exiles" 2014 New And Expanded Edition. One of the greatest photography books of the 20th century. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Originally published in 1988 in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. The First Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Josef Koudelka and The Aperture Foundation: Oversize-volume format. Brown cloth boards with facsimile of Koudelka's signature embossed on cover and titles on spine, as issued. Photographs by Josef Koudelka. Essay by Nobel Laureate Czeslaw Milosz, one of the greatest writers of the 20th century. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Switzerland to the highest standards. The reproduction quality of the First Edition has not been surpassed. In pictorial DJ, which features a reproduction of the single most celebrated image in the book, and titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Published on the occasion of the landmark retrospective exhibition held in Paris and New York in 1988. Presents Josef Koudelka's "Exiles". His most autobiographical collection. The title refers to Koudelka himself, and all other exiles like him. Koudelka escaped from Communist Prague to London and finally to Paris, where he lives to this day as a Magnum photographer. Along the way, he was in "stateless" transition several times, just like the marginalized and impoverished individuals and communities in his book. "The images are underpinned by Koudelka's stark and austere compositional style and the deliberate 'grainy-ness' of the photographs themselves. The photographs are beautiful not because they present pretty images, but because they reveal the realities and oddities of life. Milosz's essay on the meaning of exile is one of the greatest essays on the subject ever written, a perfect match to this great collection" (Robert Delpire). This comes with a pristine copy of the 2014 New And Expanded Edition, which remains faithful to the original edition while supplementing it with 10 new images and a new Essay by Robert Delpire, and is described thus: "Solitary, moving, deeply felt, and strangely disturbing, the images suggest alienation, disconnection, and love. Evokes some of the most compelling and troubling themes of the 20th century while resonating with equal force in this current moment of profound migrations and transience" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" set for Josef Koudelka collectors. This title is a great photography book. This is one of few copies of the 1988 First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. It comes with a pristine, shrinkwrapped copy of the 2014 New And Expanded Edition. As far as we know, this is the only set of "Exiles" available online. Please note: By critical consensus, the reproduction quality of the First Edition has not been surpassed, not even by the New Edition. Copies of the 1988 true First Edition available online command up to $1000 by itself, regardless of condition, as indeed copies available online have serious flaws. This is surely an accessible and lovely set. A rare set thus. 77 duotone plates. Three of Josef Koudelka's books were selected as among the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". The greatest Czech photographer of our time. A fine collectible set. (SEE ALSO OTHER JOSEF KOUDELKA TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 1597112690.
