Kingsolver, Barbara; Black Oak Books; Okeanos Press : Original Broadside - Excerpt "From Pigs in Heaven"

Black Oak Books, Berkeley, CA, 1993

Original broadside printed on beige paper in brown and purple ink. Purple and white illustration of the sun, moon, and stars printed at top. Text in brown ink. 9 3/4" x 10 1/2." Broadside is virtually pristine and intact except for slight wrinkling and a few small surface marks. A Near Fine copy. A beautiful, fine-press broadside featuring an excerpt from Barbara Kingsolver's novel, Pigs in Heaven (1993). Pigs in Heaven is a sequel to Kingsolver's first book, The Bean Trees (1988). Both novels follow the coming-of-age story of Taylor Greer and her adopted Cherokee daughter, Turtle, as Greer makes her way west from Kentucky to Arizona. Pigs in Heaven has been lauded for its special attention to detail in its depictions of the customs and culture of the Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma. Barbara Kingsolver (b. 1955) is an American author who was born in Kentucky and spent part of her childhood in the Congo (present-day Democratic Republic of the Congo). She has written a number of novels, poems, and essays and is perhaps best-known for her book, The Poisonwood Bible, a story about a missionary family in the Congo. Copyright information printed at the bottom: "Copyright 1993 by Barbara Kingsolver. From Pigs in Heaven, published by HarperCollins Publishers. This is a gift from Black Oak Books, Berkeley, on the occasion of a reading by the author. Designed and printed at Okeanos Press, 1993." Black Oak Books was a bookstore in Berkeley, California. It originally opened in 1983 and carried a wide variety of new and used books, some of which were rare and first editions. Sadly, the store closed in 2016 due to the rising cost of rent in the area. Okeanos Press was also based in Berkeley. The first few lines from the broadside: "Cash walks out the back door of his cabin carrying his television set, and with a vigorous wordlessness, sets it on a stump. It sits there not quite level, its short black cord hanging down in a defeated manner. While Cash stomps back inside, the witnesses arrange themselves in a semicircle facing the blank green eye. Nothing in this world, Alice notes, will get people organized and quiet faster than a TV set, even where there is nothing to plug it into but a tree stump.". Poster. Book Condition: Collectible-Near Fine (Near Fine). Binding: No Binding
