A speech originally delivered before the United States House of Representatives on July 26, 1848 by Alfred Iverson, Sr. (1798-1873), an American lawyer and politician. He served in the Georgia House of Representatives from 1827-1830 and Georgia Senate from 1843-1844. He later served as a U.S. Representative from Georgia from 1847-1849 and as a U.S. Senator from Georgia from 1855-1861. He was a staunch proponent of slavery and Confederate secession. In a farewell speech after Georgia passed an ordinance of secession, he said Southerners would never rejoin the Union unless the institution of slavery was protected. In this speech, Iverson does not mince words in expressing his opposition to the Oregon Territory bill which would establish the local government in the territory with the stipulation that slavery be outlawed there. Iverson makes many statements against Northerners and claims they are infringing upon Southerners' Constitutional rights through this bill. He warns that Southerners will not compromise on their support of slavery and that further abolitionist actions taken by the North will fracture the Union. Iverson also references the Wilmot Proviso and noted political figures of the period including Zachary Taylor and Millard Fillmore.. Book. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Soft cover
