400 x 296 mm; magazine, disbound from volume XCVI, and contained within a film fronted bag; wrappers discarded; pp. [385-416]; several woodcuts and advertisements; some photographs. Some moderate foxing; stitching loose. Highlights include the front page portrait of "General von Caprivi, the New Chancellor of the German Empire", with accompanying news of Bismarck's resignation and a two-page supplementary spread of "The Prince of Wales in Berlin: Parade Before the Prince at the Imperial Palace", plus a full-page series of illustrations captioned "Sketches at the Stanley and African Exhibition." Concerning Caprivi it is said: "He is undoubtedly a man of great administrative ability; but whether or not he possesses the talents of a diplomatist or the sagacity of a statesman remains to be proved."
