Ingram Brothers (Printers and Publishers) : The Illustrated London News. No. 2650. Vol. XCVI. Saturday, February 1, 1890

(London: Ingram Brothers, 1890)

400 x 296 mm; magazine, disbound from volume XCVI, and contained within a film fronted bag; wrappers discarded; pp. [129-160]; several woodcuts and advertisements; some photographs. Some moderate foxing, which is somewhat more pronounced to margin of front page; stitching loose. Highlights include the front page illustration, 'Return of Mr. Stanley's Expedition: Presentation of the Order of Zanzibar', with accompanying news and pictures of the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition, and the remarkable two-page supplementary view, 'Ruwenzori, or "The Mountains of the Moon," in Central Africa, discovered by Mr. H. M. Stanley's Expedition.' Concerning 'Mr. Stanley's Latest African Discoveries', the journal reports: 'The geographical discoveries made by Mr. H. M. Stanley's expedition in its route, accompanied by Emin Pasha, to the south of of Lake Albert Nyanza, and west of Victoria Nyanza, through a region previously unexplored, are the latest addition to our knowledge of the wonderful interior of what has been called the "Dark Continent." They are of much scientific interest, apparently solving the question of the true source of the Upper White Nile, or rather of its western branch flowing through the Albert Nyanza - the eastern branch coming from the Victoria Nyanza - while they reveal also the position of the southern lake, hitherto vaguely spoken of as the "Muta Nzige," but henceforth named Lake Albert Edward Nyanza, in honour of the Prince of Wales.' Britain's territorial dispute with Portugal in Mozambique being of current interest, there are also sketches of Delagoa Bay life, with commentary on the Portuguese colonial authorities' failure to develop the area surrounding their port, or to treat the natives humanely.
