On offer is an original archive of handwritten and typed materials including; four [4] handwritten letters c1987 - 1988, [two in original envelopes] from Ian Hawkins, author of Dam Buster related books: Münster: The Way it Was, and Courage, Honor, Victory], to Squadron Leader David J. Shannon, 617 Royal Air Force Bomber Command; one [1] fact sheet concerning 95th Bomb Group H Operations Record, two [2] 390th Bomb Group Memorial Air Museum post cards and other correspondence from 'The Sunday Times' concerning Ian Hawkins; two [2] letters from John Maynard to David Shannon concerning a biography and appreciation of Guy Gibson which he was planning for publication on the 50th anniversary of the Dams raid. Bio notes from one online source: Dave Shannon was born in Australia joined the RAAF in 1941, and trained as a pilot. He flew an extended tour of 36 operations with 106 Squadron RAF before being chosen for 617 Squadron. He piloted an Lancaster AJ-L in Gibson's group, he was called off as he began his run on to the Möhne Dam after the breach became apparent; but flew on and was the first pilot to attack the Eder Dam. Awarded a DSO for the Dams operation, he later served as Deputy to Leonard Cheshire, flying Mosquitoes on what was by then his third tour. He later served with 511 and 246 Squadrons, and returned to Australia after the war. Very nice small archive of vintage materials relating to this famed Squadron. VG+.. English.
