Hughson, David : A History and Description of London, Westminster and Southwark - in four volumes

James Robins and Co., London, 1807

Four volumes (complete). Edward Pugh wrote under the name David Hughson. In this way he wrote several volumes of the history and then later walks about London and its environs in the early 1800s. This set are amongst his earliest works. This is an attractive set from the library of Frederick J O Montagu (a barontecy was established for third time in this owner's lifetime). Each volume has a small, attractive ex-libris plate on the first pastedown. All volumes have been rebound in half leather. The leather edges have gilt scoring. The leathered spines have five ridges. Each of the panels has either gilt titling or gilt decoration. They are smart and youthfully handsome. Each of the volumes have gilt papertrims along the top edges. The pages of all volumes have printer marks. Chalk paper frontis and end papers. Handmade paper. Volume 1: Albion Press; the front and back pages have been stained by damp. The back pages have been wrinkled. The binding is tight, the pages are clear and easy to read. They may be handled with confidence and enjoyment. Folded maps and plans in good, sound condition. The damp stains do not interfere with text thus ensuring that reading is unaffected. The back cover is marked and stained from the damp. The leather is serene. Volume II: printed by W. Stratford, Temple-Bar. As for Volume I save for the complete absence of any damp damage/ marks/ stains. The corners have knocks. The leather spine has very mild wear. The pages, text and illustrations are clear, genial and a pleasure. Volume III: Albion Press. This volume has damp damage and staining to the back. The leather is unaffected. The last pages have been wrinkled and/or stained. They are, however, clear and eager. The frontis and very early pages have mild edge wear and storage damage. This does not intrude on the pages much beyond the edges. The book is resolutely approachable and enjoyable. The text, illustrations etc are neat and clear and clean. The corners have some wear. Volume IV: printer not indicated. The covers have some damp marks and staining. Within, the early and later pages have some mild wrinkling. The contents are assured, reassuring, clubbable. Each volume has a previous owner stamp (B Alexander and a book number). Each volume is attractive for the shelf. The wonderful thing about this set of walks about Westminster and Southwark is that they may still be used! And where war damage is encountered, the descriptions and tales would provoke wistfulness on top of the pleasure and ease of the explorations. A pleasant, happy set despite the above mentioned damp consequences, and certainly one to extract admiring comments from acquisitive visitors. fk. Book Condition: Good. Binding: Hardcover. Jacket: No Jacket
