Hitchon, Brian : The Geology of the Kariba Area

(Lusaka: The Government Printer, 1958)

Northern Rhodesia Geological Survey Department Report No. 3. Squarish 8vo; cloth-backed printed paper over boards; pp. vi + (ii) + 41; several diagrams and tables, incl. folding; photographs; four large folding, coloured geological charts in endpocket. Cover a little sunned, with slightest wear to extremities; labels and stamps of US Geological Survey. Very good condition. An uncommon survey of exceptional importance, given that the Kariba gorge was flooded shortly after its completion, thus rendering impossible the sort of work that was done during its preparation. "A number of factors influenced the decision to examine and map geologically the area of country to which this Report relates. In the first place, mapping has been undertaken continuously since 1952 in the hitherto completely unmapped portion of country lying between the Zambezi River and the railway from Livingstone to the Copperbelt. Secondly, in the course of geological investigations in areas flanking the north side of the Zambezi Valley, certain significant changes of structural trend had been observed to be converging in the general vicinity of the Kariba Gorge; thirdly, the decision of the Federal Government to proceed with the construction of the Kariba Gorge hydro-electric project meant that much of the country involved in the present survey would eventually and probably by about 1961, become inundated and therefore lost to further investigation. It was considered most desirable that as much geological information as possible should be extracted from the area while it was still possible." - from the Foreword
