He has written over fifty books of poetry and essays. Hirschman was once personally complimented by Ernest Hemingway upon his writing skills after he sent him a story at the age of nineteen. Colophon printed at the bottom: "300 copies printed by Noel Young for The Lost Pleiade Press, August 1974." The first lines from the poem: "Time of the people changed to prayer, / time of the prayer changed to water, / time of the night on the inside of the skin ...". Poster.
