8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. On offer is a superb relic of the international Abolitionist movement being an autograph letter [ALS] completely handwritten and signed by French poet Hippolyte de Saint-Anthoine who was Secretary-General of the Institut d'Afrique, an abolitionist society in Paris and on whose letterhead this letter is written. This one page letter dated Paris, September 13, 1856 to "Monsieur & ami" U.S. Congressman and abolitionist Joshua R. Giddings who represented Ohio in the U.S. House of Representatives as a Whig from 1838 until March 22, 1842, when he resigned, after a vote of censure had been passed upon him by the House in response to his motion in defense of the slave mutineers in the Creole case. He was subsequently elected to the to fill the vacancy caused by his own resignation serving from December 5, 1842 to March 3, 1859, declining to be a candidate for reelection in 1858. In French, a casual reading finds a warm intimate personal letter to his intimate friend Saint-Anthoine has penned in French: "the Emancipation of the Slaves" and in English: "the cause of human freedom is the cause of God." 7 x 9 inches letter is overall G+..
