HILL, Octavia (1838-1912) : A 2 1/2pp Autograph Letter to Dr. Carter, Written from 190 Marylebone Road, SW, Signed and Dated Jan 3rd 1904

Octavis Hill writes "I have been thinking over your proposition that I should speak at Birmingham, & in view of the gallant stand made by Mr. Nettlefold & others against municipal trading, & in hope of independent wise house management being arranged I ought to come". She goes on to propose times and dates, and whether she should speak or present a paper. She thanks Carter for offering accomodation, but declines. She ends by saying "I am sorry to say that I have not yet found the ideal worker to be trained for Birmingham.....". Octavia Hill (3 December 1838 – 13 August 1912) was an English social reformer, whose main concern was the welfare of the inhabitants of cities, especially London, in the second half of the nineteenth century. Alfred Hernry Carter (1849-1917) was Professor of Medicine at Birmingham. Carter was actively concerned with the foundation of Birmingham University and took a prominent part in bringing about a closer connection of the medical faculty of Queen’s College with Mason College. Alfred Carter not only took a large part in the medical life of Birmingham, but a share also in the public affairs of the city, serving for a time on the city council, and as a member of its health committee.
