VG.[Though an ex-public library book,with all it's usual library alpha-numerical notations,it's overall appearance and condition,is of an acceptable solid,clean example.] Sub-title reads: The Story of Certain Famous Vessels of War and of their Successors in the Navies of the United States and of the Confederate States of America From 1775 to 1902.A neat,clean,dark blue Anchor motif'fed 'Plymouth Public Libraries - MOUNT WISE NAVAL HISTORY LIBRARY' bookplate pasted to immaculate plain white front pastedown and previous owner's name+ dated (March 31st 1903.) inscrptn to ffe opposite.A red ink 'Withdrawn From Plymouth Library Services' horizontal,rectangular stamp to foot of title-page,recto of same with usual public library alpha-numerical notations/markings/stamp.Recto of rear free endpaper's bottom edge has a taped library barcode,no other ex-library notation noted,apart from those already described.Bright and generally clean,publisher's original,dark blue cloth bds with blue silhouetteted 3-masted sailing ship in/to a white background square towards top edge of upper board with bright crisp,stamped gilt lettering below it,and to spine/backstrip which also has a white tippexed 3 number numerical library notation towards foot of spine/backstrip,just above publisher's name.Both head+ foot of spine/backstrip minimally bumped with reciprocal creasing, along with some miniscule rubbing with fraying; all corners minimally bumped and with some minimal rubbing too.Top edges gilt,the fore and bottom edges are slightly aged and darkened - as usual/normal - and deckled (uncut/untrimmed) too; contents generally bright,tight, clean and solid and sound; apart from detached (but laid-in and present) title and dedication pages and tissue-guarded b/w portrait [Admiral David Glasgow Farragut, U.S.N] frntis too.Bottom edges of the title+dedication pages and the frntis,all with minor closed tears/ nicks,and similar to vertical edge of the frntispiece alone,too.Both front+rear hinges cracked - these faults and the loose pages would suit sympathetic restoration/repair. Plus [unpaginated]; 2pp blanks, separate title+dedication pages, tissue-guarded frntis,2pp publisher's advert to rear,along with another 2pp blanks. The author had previously published 'The Story of the Lucky Little "Enterprise" and Her Successors in the United States Navy.' with favourable reviews and comments.It was suggested that a similar title might be produced for other historic ships of the United States.
