Original publisher's brochure with a green and white illustration of the hotel amid picturesque scenery on the front and back panels. No date, circa late 1910s-early 1920s. 2 1/4" x 5 1/2." Six panels, complete. Five black and white illustrations, complete. One leaf with accordion folds that opens into three panels. Brochure is very clean and intact except for a few small wrinkles at the bottom. A Very good copy. Highlands Inn was built by Frank Work in 1916 and opened by J. Frank Devendorf in 1917. Devendorf was one of the founders of Carmel-by-the Sea. The inn became popular spot for artists, writers, and celebrities. Some of the guests who stayed there were authors Jack London, George Sterling, and Mary Austin, photographers Ansel Adams and Edward Weston, movie stars Marlon Brando, Elizabeth Taylor, and John Travolta, the Crown Prince of Japan, and the Crown Prince of Jordan. Over the years, the inn saw several owners and underwent a series of renovations. In 1995, the inn was acquired by Hyatt, which still runs the property as a hotel and is called Hyatt Carmel Highlands Residence Club today. This brochure advertises different features of the Highlands Inn, including a "Honeymoon Cottage" overlooking the coast, its "redwood chalets ... nestling among the pine trees and flower gardens and commanding a charming view of the ocean," the amenities each room has to offer, and its lobby and dining room. The brochure also lists points of interest such as the Seventeen-Mile Drive, the town of Del Monte (now Monterey), the Pebble Beach golf course, Carmel Valley, San Clemente, Tassajara, Santa Cruz, and nearby coastal redwood forests. A small four-page brochure is laid in and printed on beige paper. It lists the rates of the rooms, times of breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and a notice of newly opened trails.. Book.
