The greatest civil engineering feat undertaken in the United Kingdom since the building of the railways on the 19thC,was the construction of airfields for the Royal Air Force and the United States Army Air Forces between 1934 and 1945. During that time the original 52 were increased to 740 - in the British Isles alone! Overseas, the Royal Engineers and later the Royal Air Force Airfield Construction Service, built about 1,000 more. Some of these airfields were grass, some had various formal three runway arrangements, some had two,and many later airfields only one. This book looks at the development of airfields from many angles. It was a complex matter involving government decisions at the highest level, transportation facilities, fuel availability, construction schedules and both tactical and strategic requirements.During this period there were two revolutions in airfield construction. The first was the change from grass to concrete runways and the second the development of mobile and rapidly assembled landing sites. This is the first work to deal comprehensively with the importance of airfields for the vital underpinning of the grand strategic bomber offensive and the air defence of Great Britain, and also for the tactical air forces which supported the armies and protected the shipping lanes.
