Thomas Wentworth Higginson (1823-1911) was an American author and minister. He advocated for abolition, women's rights, and the rights of other disenfranchised people. In this book, Higginson discusses various topics in several essays divided into two sections, "Literature" and "Life." Under "Literature," Higginson's essays include "A Keats Manuscript," "Local Fiction," and "The Foe to Eloquence." Under "Life," Higginson discusses "The Cant of Cosmopolitanism," "Anglomania and Anglophobia," and "The Future of a Polite Society," among other topics relating to class, ethnicity, and society as a whole..
