LONDON.WILLIAM COLLINS SONS & CO LTD.,1981.

ISBN 00222335X.

UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.NFINE/NFINE. No owner inscrptn and absence of published price - these generally believed to be export only examples, issued before trade release/issue in country of original publication - so no price-clip to the dw/dj.Bright,crisp,clean,glossy,colour pictorial artwork,by Donald Macpherson, illustrated dw/dj with white shadow-outlined black capitalised lettering for author's name and other white lettering to front panel, similarly coloured lettering to a black spine/backstrip and a critic's white lettered review to rear panel respectively; and all with negligible shelf-wear,bumping,creasing to edges and corners – no nicks, tears or splits present. Inevitable minor, superficial scoring/ indents without penetration to boards beneath,to either panel of dw/dj.Book with a very slight lean.Top+fore-edges bright and clean without foxing/spotting; contents bright, tight, clean, solid and sound – no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners – pristine, appears unread, apart from my own collation.Publisher's bright, crisp,clean,sharp-cornered,original,plain royal blue cloth boards with bright, crisp, blocked gilt lettering to spine/backstrip and immaculate/ clean plain white sets of endpapers.UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,11-215pp [paginated] includes 19 chapters; plus [unpaginated] half-title with author's other works listed to verso, title page,a dedication with blank verso,a 'Sicily - 1943' separator page with blank verso, and story preamble also with blank verso. Visually the exterior appearance is acceptable for a book of it's age,and even internally, the book is in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation. It is only the exterior faults described that prevent a higher grading. It was the summer of 1943.The Allied forces were poised to invade Sicily but even the stoutest heart quailed at the thought of the bloody and protracted fighting that would be necessary before they could force their way through the rugged mountains. If the peasants could be induced to rise in revolt against the German occupiers, then the task of the invaders would be immeasurably eased. But only the Mafia could call out the peasants, and only Antonio Luca could control the Mafia. And Luca's brother had gone to the electric chair in Chicago in 1929,leaving Antonio with a rooted hatred of America and all things American. So Luca's god-daughter Maria, now seeking refuge within a nunnery from the violence that had warped her life; Lucky Luciano,a prince among gangsters on leave of absence from the penitentiary; and Major Harry Carter, formerly Claverhouse Professor of Ancient History at the University of Cambridge and now a star of SOE, set out to persuade him to change his mind. The author is renowned as a master of the adventure story but never has he written with greater authority, created characters of more vivid reality, led up so staggering a denouement.Did it really happen like this; was Lucky Luciano set loose in his homeland to serve the Allied cause; was the course of history indeed turned by the effort of these extraordinary adventurers? Who knows? But Luciano's Luck carries absolute conviction. As with 'THE EAGLE HAS LANDED.',there will be few readers who do not ask themselves - can any story that sounds so true really be a work of fiction?
