A history and study of "horticultural humbuggery" or horticultural fraud which affected mostly Western states from 1850-1880. Professor Earl W. Hayter describes four common perpetrators of horticultural fraud during that time, "tree peddlers" who sold low-quality trees and plants to unsuspecting customers, "tree grafters" who provided questionable tree grafting services, "tree invigorators or restorers" who falsely claimed they were able to revitalize damaged trees and crops, and "hedgers" who made unreliable offers to maintain live fences (windbreaks and trees used as property lines). Hayter also discusses the efforts to stop horticultural fraud and how these questionable sales practices and services were eventually eliminated or, at least, greatly diminished.. Book.
