8vo. 97pp extract, printed in double columns, salvaged from damaged issues of The Century Magazine, Volume XXVI, Nos. 4 - 6, August / September / October, 1883, and Volume XXVII, Nos. 1 - 3, November / December, 1883, and January, 1884. The original appearance of this only-novel by Abraham Lincoln's personal secretary. Harper & Brother's would publish the title in 1884. See BAL 7762. Included is a single leaf from the Open Letters section, November issue, which reprints a letter to the editor from a reader, Edward J. Shriver, who challenges the overall tone of the novel regarding its depiction of trade unions -- which is decidedly unfavorable --, and a rebuttal from the author in which he strongly re-states his position, and an additional 3-pages from the Open Letters section in the Century issue of March, 1884, in which the author addresses various negative critical comments received specific to the novel.
