First edition, limited to 1,000 numbered copies signed by the artist (this being #255). Large 4to. Unpaginated. Green cloth, gilt lettered, ruled and decorated. All edges gilt, and with glossy marbled endpapers. With eighty-seven plates reproduced on stiff card, each with an unprinted paper protector and a separate caption leaf. The cloth rubbed and a little nicked at the backstrip ends, and with a touch of further rubbing and wear to the corner tips. The front hinge cracked and tender at the colophon leaf, and with some tenderness to one further gathering, and the whole slightly shaken. Some fox spotting to the preliminary leaves and to some margins including the plates margins, but the illustrations themselves almost entirely spared. A good copy of this mammoth reproduction of Furniss's 1887 Gainsborough Gallery exhibition, conceived as a burlesque (and deemed by the 'Times' "an artistic joke") on various artistic styles of the period.
