There once lived in India an all-powerful Emperor, who owned everything he wanted, from riches to beautiful princesses. Then one year his new and lovely young wife presented him with twin sons,Raji and Sula, who grew up to be so beloved by everyone at Court that the Emperor was jealous. Determined to make himself the centre of attraction once again,he ordered his Treasurer to find him a jewel to match the splendour of his soul. But the Treasurer failed. Then,in the stillest moment of the day,a demon suddenly appeared,to offer the Emperor the irresistible bargain of a magnificent opal in return for his twin sons - and so succeeded in spiriting them away.Sula completely disappeared and Raji, who never gave up hope of finding his brother, was set the task of caring for the demon's proud and evil-tempered stallion, Darkness. But the young prince secretly gave his attentions to its stable companion,a broken-down despised nag called Nameless, and it wasn't long before a sprinkling of magic powder enabled Raji to turn Nameless into an enchanted Arab horse and to ride off on him across the sky, still searching for the missing Sula. This exciting story of the twin princes and of the enchanted horse,in a magic world of adventure, brave deeds, friendships and strange beauty,is enhanced by Pauline Baynes's magnificently detailed and delicate full-colour illustrations. Pauline Baynes, born in Sussex in 1922. Spent her early childhood in India, later studying at the Farnham School of Art and the Slade School of Fine Art.During the war she worked for Army Camouflage, and then for the Admiralty Hydrographic Dept. After the war she returned to her work as a painter (tempera),designer and illustrator. In 1968,she won the Kate Greenaway Medal for her illustrations to A Dictionary of Chivalry, and she was runner- up for the prize in 1972.Her fluent pen and ink style is particularly appropriate in line block reproduction. Her work is often inspired by medieval manuscripts (e.g. Farmer Giles of Ham,1946) or by Persian miniatures (e.g The Horse and His Boy,1954),and is extremely decorative. The imaginative flair and lively attention to detail in her illustrations make them well-suited to the spirit of such books as the 'Narnia' series by C.S.Lewis,all of which she has illustrated.
