Suppose you stumble on a correspondence and are shameless enough to start reading. 'This is quite a character,' you think. 'What is he up to?' That is what starting 'Wake up, Stupid' is like.It takes the form of letters from and to Professor Lee Youngdahl, of a Californian University, who has just finished writing a brilliant play and has resolved to keep in trim by writing at least one letter a day.His motive is partly to catch up with his mail, but mostly to start something - he is not quite sure what - humming. It soon becomes evident that Lee is an unorthodox Professor. He owns 6.25% of a heavyweight boxer, and is no mean boxer himself. He is also a parachute jumper, a flouter of the Mormon Church and a flirter with actresses.Perhaps he will not go on being a professor for much longer. As letter follows letter the story becomes clear and the characters even clearer.Lee himself is a masterpiece:a genius perhaps;anyway a whole man, whom you feel you have known for years, have laughed with, quarrelled with and loved.By the time he has been knocked out by his own investment, has stolen an admirer's car and landed in a Chicago police station, you can't bear to let him go.This is a book so alive and funny that it makes many of its contemporaries look like stuffed vegetable marrows.See also rja1952 - another copy.
